  • How to Make Playdough
Picture
Anish Kapoor is famous for his abstract sculptures using rich colors and unexpected materials. His sculpture, Cloud Gate (also known as "The Bean") is a very popular attraction in Chicago. Made with mirrored steel, Cloud Gate creates an enjoyable reflectivity of the city's famous skyline. Think about how his material choice affects the outcome! Also, take a look at its large scale!

This is super fun to do, but requires adult supervision!
So grab a parent, make sure you have all the ingredients, and start making your own play dough!
Picture
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 Tbs vegetable oil
  • gel food coloring

Step 1 :
Mix together everything, except the food coloring, in a sauce pan. Cook over low/medium heat, stirring constantly.

Step 2 :

Once it begins to thicken, add in the food coloring.

Step 3 :
Once the dough is no longer wet, and begins to gather around the spoon, remove from heat and place on a plate or wax paper to cool.

Step 4 :
Let it cool completely, then knead the playdough to soften it and completely mix in the food coloring. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Step 5 :
Now its time to play! You can build and sculpt your play dough to create a base for your sculpture or you can use it to personalize and accessorize your sculpture! Check out the other pages to see what other materials you can use when creating your sculpture!
